One Embrace 16x 20" (with frame) 11" x 14" (without frame) Metal Embossing Available for Sale 2006 |
If you are interested in purchasing any of my original work, please check if it is available in the description, and feel free to write me at Shayani[at]iamdarkbutlovely.com or comment below. I love to hear from you about my work, even if it is only to share your response to it! Enjoy!
This is one of the most unique pieces I have to date in my collection. Not only because it requires a different skill set to create, but also because the correct gauge of metal to do this embossing has been very hard to find . . . In fact, I am yet to replenish my materials since I created this months before I immigrated to Canada in 2006. The type of metal embossing commonly available at art stores here are too thin in comparison, which tells you one thing for sure - this piece is different from the metal embossing that you may sometimes come across!
Here, I am depicting a value that is very dear to my Sri Lankan culture - the tightly knit family unit. After I traced the image on to the metal, I used wooden embossing tools to apply pressure on the reverse side until the desired image popped up. The work was long and painstakingly slow. I had to take my time to apply the right amount of pressure because, although the metal was not as thin as the common metal embossing sheets you find here, it could still be damaged if I applied too much pressure. Once the image was completely embossed, I used a combination of metal paints to paint the image as I wished.
