Creatives and Social Media: Hard work or Popularity?

Thursday, 28 January 2016
Social media is a loaded gun. This article is really about how not to shoot yourself and your dream with it.

Order: the Foundation of Creativity

Monday, 18 January 2016
I never thought I would type order and creativity in the same sentence.

But here I am in 2016, not only writing about it but also becoming more and more convinced that order and creativity are not arch enemies in my creative practice!

Confessions: my struggle with procrastination

Thursday, 29 October 2015

My name is Shayani Ann Turko
and I struggle with procrastination

It's sensible to write only about the things one does well; to write about things one does not quite do right, I think is brilliance. The reason is, sometimes our confessions let people know that they are not alone in their struggles, which takes away the stress involved in "change". Stress may set the alarm bells off, alerting us to the fact that change is needed in our lives, but rarely does it inspire transformation.

Want to Change the World? 3 Things to Remember

Thursday, 22 October 2015

This post is for dreamers. Dreamers who’ve been awakened to something bigger than themselves. Dreamers who know, even if vaguely, that they just cannot continue to live the way they’ve lived so far. Dreamers who feel in the depths of their soul, that somehow they are called to change the world!

If this is you then, this post is for you.

'Riveting' thoughts about the self-help industry

Thursday, 13 August 2015
Sometime ago I came across “8 Ways Self-Help is Killing You – And How to Use Them” by Kyle Eschenroeder, and I must say that I enjoyed it! At a time when my attention span is unreliable at best, Kyle made me read the whole damn thing! Why? The man has content!

Musings on Hope, Waste, and Flexibility

Thursday, 6 August 2015
In a previous article - #W.I.P. : Re-Discovery, I wrote about my experience of how I was taught on the ability of the artist to preserve hope and re-discover beauty through the ashes. In this post, I follow up on the lesson by re-considering a piece of work I had previously thrown out in frustration.

Here's the initial idea.

The heart of the artist

Tuesday, 21 July 2015
It has been a little more than a year since I decided to take the narrow path of becoming a full time artist. Reaching this decision was a difficult, scary, and lonely one. Even after making the decision and tentatively stepping on this path, I often succumbed to self-doubt, and discouragement and if I am honest, still do.

So after nearly a year, what do I have to say about the path I took? I think looking at the evidence full in the face, without judgment, is the way I should go here.

Part II
In this second part of Navigating the networks: a brief social media guide for artists selling online, I talk about how to make sure your blog posts get posted on your Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn accounts simultaneously so that you maximise the visibility of your blog.

On Texture & Accessible Art

Friday, 15 May 2015
One Embrace - Metal Embossing

I am really beginning to experiment with texture on canvas. Texture, rends the painting a tactile, as well as three dimensional effect, which for me is quite important. Although my vision is not fully impaired, I have always wondered on how art could be made accessible for those who cannot see the renderings of the artist.

My First Juried Art Exhibition

Eruption 12x16" oil on canvas
So . . . I am pretty pumped these days!

Two weeks ago, my art was selected by a jury of artists in Winnipeg to be exhibited at Art Revealing Transformation, an art show sponsored by Crescent Fort Rouge United Church.

Navigating the networks: a brief social media guide for artists selling online

Friday, 14 November 2014
So, I have stepped into the deep waters of internet selling. As an artist, just getting used to making art as a job by setting up my Etsy shop - DreamsinBtwnSpaces, was a stretch. But having spent the last 2-3 months diligently going at it, I no longer feel overwhelmed when I navigate Etsy or think about how to build my presence online.

Why we continue to create

Friday, 31 October 2014

Today I just want to write about one of my paintings and what it means to me. The title of this 16x20" oil on canvas work is called "Promises". I have decided to sell fine art prints of this work and others on Etsy. Appreciate you checking out my shop, into which I am already in the process of adding more art work :)

The Art of Self-Encouragement

Monday, 20 October 2014
Embracing Freedom 16x20" oil on Canvas Pad
One of the hardest challenges the artist faces is discouragement; arising from one's own confusion and self-doubt, but also from the skepticism (expressed however mildly) by the people who matter most in one's life.
