But the Spirit drew me close; He never gives up, never loses hope. . .
The Spirit whispered, "Study about fire, about the flame. . ."
I've learnt to listen to the Spirit through the years and I did as I heard. . . An image alighted in my imagination of fire, of fire carriers, of a butterfly, a butterfly carrying holy fire!
Then my Friend reminded me of a previous work I had started, and had given up on after I had spent many hours on it several months ago. By now I knew something was really up. I was right! I was going to get an unforgettable lesson on what it really means to be an artist.
You never have to give up; you never have to lose hope! Not one minute spent in creative work is ever wasted . . . if you understand hope as an artist.
You never have to give up; you never have to lose hope! Not one minute spent in creative work is ever wasted . . . if you understand hope as an artist.
You see, being creative means you are able to see beyond what is broken. You see purpose when the original intent of the artist is destroyed, distorted. Being a creator means, you are able to re-discover and re-create beauty in what was marred.
Here's what I mean.
The first picture is my failed attempt at making a realistic representation of a photo I got permission to paint. (By now, I have come to accept that my strengths are more on the surrealist / abstract end of the spectrum).

After I researched online about the components of a flame, I learnt that its truest part was the bluest. That was where it was the hottest, the place where the most oxygen was.
My Friend whispered, "Use cobalt on the edges; the edges of the butterfly are the most potent because it is in those edges, the natural world meets the supernatural."
"Use white in the middle, the purest place, the heart of this creature" continued my Friend. . .
After following many more minute, step by step instructions, I finally put my brush down and stepped back to look at my canvas . . .

I understood a little bit more.
the artist
above anyone else
carries hope in this world
because
the artist
knows
creative work
is never wasted
never in vain
hope
surges
rages
wages
war on despair, loss, and futility
re-discovering
re-creating
beauty
through
ashes.
One more reason to pursue my passion.
