Finished Work: Raging Love

I started this piece with charcoal, and then had to complete it with oil paints. The creative process is so similar to life really, you start off with one thing and end up taking alternative routes due to the vagaries and variances of life.

The final outcome captures a lot of emotional energy and intensity with the fiery red and oranges as well as the darker shades of green, blue and black. Though the white sharply contrasts with these deep hues, I think it takes the intensity of the overall piece up a notch.

I was a bit 'iffy' about a raging sea dominated by oranges etc . . .  because does not correspond with reality, especially during a storm. But then, I'm always subverting reality!

One of the most interesting parts of the creative process for this particular piece was my experience with picking a name. I was stumped. Then I posted it on my facebook page and was privileged to receive some awesome feedback.

Here are some excerpts from what my viewers said.

Peter quoting "Boundless Salvation' written by William Booth :
O ocean of mercy, oft longing I’ve stood
On the brink of thy wonderful, life giving flood!
Once more I have reachèd this soul cleansing sea,
I will not go back, I will not go back,
I will not go back till it rolls over me.

Adelaide D.:
"makes me think of the excitement of racing from wave-top to wave-top with Him... "

James T.:
"It looks like a raging sea"

So taking the cue from these responses I went with Raging Love, because the greatest love I have ever experienced is in the form of mercy, which is intense, passionate, never mediocre, and in terms of strength is even violent as an ocean in the throes of a billowing storm.
