Earlier this year, I started out with this painting. It was a stretch for my level of skill at that time, since I had never done detailed drawings, or paintings of people before. On top of that, I did this work with charcoals.
I learnt a lot in the process of working with charcoals on canvas. First, you have to put down something like a drop sheet to catch the dust. Preferably, it is best to wear a dust mask as well. When you are working on a large canvas, it is actually recommended to wear one, because of the quantity of charcoal dust produced.
Once I completed the painting of the woman, I used a fixative to make the charcoal permanent. One thing you have got to keep in mind though is that you need to know how to spray evenly, otherwise, you're going to have splotches all over the painting and will have to redo or discard your hard work.
Which, unfortunately is what happened to me!!!
BUT I'm learning to move past spilt milk without sitting there and bawling for too long. So after months, today, I picked up my painting again, and laid done some good old gesso, restraining my self from dipping into discouragement as my beautiful, hard work disappeared under the white paint. If I hadn't been trained in perseverance, this would've actually been a very devastating thing, and I would've long since given up.
But the redo is really taking a life of it's own. The Spirit is all over it! One thing's for sure, the original intention of the painting, is long past! Stay tuned to see what the Spirit and I do with this!

About the title: I am thinking of "Sing out O Barren Woman' for it, which I will write more about when I post the finished work on my Gallery page.
Till then, have a blast!
