Gratitude List #15

Friday, 19 February 2016
It's been awhile since I wrote my last my #Gratitude List. But when you don't do something for awhile, that's how you really understand how important it is, if you stop to think about it.

Confessions: my struggle with procrastination

Thursday, 29 October 2015

My name is Shayani Ann Turko
and I struggle with procrastination

It's sensible to write only about the things one does well; to write about things one does not quite do right, I think is brilliance. The reason is, sometimes our confessions let people know that they are not alone in their struggles, which takes away the stress involved in "change". Stress may set the alarm bells off, alerting us to the fact that change is needed in our lives, but rarely does it inspire transformation.

'Riveting' thoughts about the self-help industry

Thursday, 13 August 2015
Sometime ago I came across “8 Ways Self-Help is Killing You – And How to Use Them” by Kyle Eschenroeder, and I must say that I enjoyed it! At a time when my attention span is unreliable at best, Kyle made me read the whole damn thing! Why? The man has content!

Musings on Hope, Waste, and Flexibility

Thursday, 6 August 2015
In a previous article - #W.I.P. : Re-Discovery, I wrote about my experience of how I was taught on the ability of the artist to preserve hope and re-discover beauty through the ashes. In this post, I follow up on the lesson by re-considering a piece of work I had previously thrown out in frustration.

Here's the initial idea.

Lifestyle of an artist: Three Rituals for Creative Living

Thursday, 30 July 2015
In a previous post I've written about the heart of the ArtistI'm following it up with another post, this time about the lifestyle of an artist. Often people think that as creatives, we are slaves to abstraction and are out of touch with reality. The opposite is in fact true of many who have chosen creative expression as their vocation and career in life. As a visual artist, while I deal with a lot of visionary ideas, I also engage in daily routines, which lead up to the final piece of art.

The heart of the artist

Tuesday, 21 July 2015
It has been a little more than a year since I decided to take the narrow path of becoming a full time artist. Reaching this decision was a difficult, scary, and lonely one. Even after making the decision and tentatively stepping on this path, I often succumbed to self-doubt, and discouragement and if I am honest, still do.

So after nearly a year, what do I have to say about the path I took? I think looking at the evidence full in the face, without judgment, is the way I should go here.

Why we continue to create

Friday, 31 October 2014

Today I just want to write about one of my paintings and what it means to me. The title of this 16x20" oil on canvas work is called "Promises". I have decided to sell fine art prints of this work and others on Etsy. Appreciate you checking out my shop, into which I am already in the process of adding more art work :)

The Art of Self-Encouragement

Embracing Freedom 16x20" oil on Canvas Pad
One of the hardest challenges the artist faces is discouragement; arising from one's own confusion and self-doubt, but also from the skepticism (expressed however mildly) by the people who matter most in one's life.
